The Moral Values in Novel “Earth” and the Values of “Pancasila” Students’ Profile

This research is entitled “The Moral Values in Novel “Earth” and The Values of “Pancasila” Students’ Profile (A Descriptive Study of Values in Novel “Earth”)”. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the values in friendship and “Pancasila” students’ profiles that are portrayed in the novel. The researcher uses the ‘Earth’ novel written by Tere Liye as a data source. This study is descriptive qualitative research with Helm’s theory and the “Pancasila” students’ profile as the basic theory. A flow analysis model is used to process the intended data, and a structural approach is used to analyze the data. The results of this study show the individual values and social values in friendship, as well as the “Pancasila” students’ profiles portrayed in this novel, namely beriman, bertakwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, dan berakhlak mulia (faith and piety toward God Almighty) (noble character), berkebhinekaan global (global diversity), bergotong-royong (mutual cooperation), kreatif (creativity), bernalar kritis (critical reasoning), and mandiri (independence).

The Effect of Word Wall Application on Students Reading Comprehension in Ninth Grade Students

This study examines the use of Word Wall application in teaching reading comprehension to ninth-grade students at SMP NU Kaligesing. The material used in this study was narrative text. This research was a classroom action research (CAR). The research, conducted in two cycles, aimed to address issues such as low motivation, vocabulary mastery, student scores, and text comprehension. To analyze this data the researcher used research conclusions, data visualization and data reduction. The mean score in cycle 1 was 68.66 and in cycle 2, it was 72.46. The study found a significant percentage change in students' reading comprehension scores in each cycle, with a significant difference of approximately 26.17% for cycle 1 and 5.54% for cycle 2.

Portraying Self-Regulated Learning of EFL Higher Students Post Covid-19

This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges related to the techniques of instruction used in the education field during and after COVID-19. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological design. Questionnaires are employed to gather data regarding the perspectives of EFL students regarding the educational process both before and after COVID-19 through G-form. This study was carried out at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, a private university in North Sumatra, specifically in the English Education Department. The findings highlight the critical need to set up dedicated study areas for students engaged in distant learning, especially in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these drawbacks, the post-COVID-19 era produced positive changes by placing a higher priority on individualized training and technological integration.

Analysis Paradox in Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken Using Riffaterre’s Method

This study uses Riffaterre's semiotic matrix theory as an analytical tool to look at Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken". The intricacies and contradictions found in the poem can be better understood thanks to this theory, especially in light of the selected theme. It is clear from the analysis that the poem's linguistic devices and contradictions serve to both enhance the reading experience and provoke readers to consider how they come to their own decisions. The study's findings support the notion that Frost's poetry is timeless because it moves readers to think critically about the significance of their life decisions and the unanticipated results of their decisions. The findings emphasize the significance of hermeneutics in revealing the poems' underlying meanings as well as the reader's responsibility to interpret any inconsistencies or "ungrammaticalities" that may occur.

Utilizing Zoom Application for Teaching TOEFL Training to Nursing Majors in Politeknik Kesehatan Pontianak

This study investigates how well nursing majors are prepared TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) by using the Zoom meeting application. The qualitative research involved a group of nursing students enrolled in a TOEFL preparation course conducted entirely online using the Zoom platform. The purpose of the study was to assess the learning results of the students, their level satisfiction with the online learning environment, and how well the Zoom application supported the teaching and learning process. The results indicated that the students significantly improved their TOEFL scores and expressed high levels of satisfication with the online learning experience. The study also highlighted the importance of providing adequate technical support and creating an interactive and engaging learning environment to ensure the success of online TOEFL training programs. Overall, the findings suggest that the Zoom meeting application can be an effective tool for teaching TOEFL training to Nursing majors, provided that certain best practices are followed to ensure a successful online learning experience.

Review Study Learning Apps in Teaching Vocabulary Using Duolingo

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is or not effectiveness Duolingo application in teaching vocabulary at tenth grade of SMA N 2 Purworejo. The design of this research was quasi experimental research which belongs to the quantitative method. The researcher determines this study as quantitative in the form of quasi experimental design that involves one only group pre-test and post-test. The population of this study was tenth grade of SMA N 2 Purworejo. By employing purposive sampling technique, the sample of this study are consist 36 students from X IPS 1. Then, the instrument in this research is consisted of forty question multiple choice for pre-test and post-test. To compare the result of pre-test and post-test used Mann-Whitney U-test in SPSS 16.0. The result shows the mean score of post-test it could be seen that the mean of the post-test score (73.40) was larger, that the mean of pre-test score (49.30). While, the Zvalue is 7.972 and the Ztable is 1.96. It means that Zvalue is higher than Ztable that is 7.972 > 1.96. So, it could be concluded that the use of Duolingo application in teaching vocabulary at tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Purworejo in the academic year 2019/2020 is effective.

Investigating the Utilization of YouTube Videos for Improving Speaking Proficiency in English

This study conducts a systematic literature review to examine the efficacy of incorporating YouTube videos to improve the speaking abilities of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. From 2022 to 2023, the study thoroughly examines, assesses, and combines 30 pertinent publications. By applying strict criteria for inclusion, the evaluation focuses on three specific publications that examine the influence of YouTube videos on speaking proficiency. The findings emphasize the favourable results regarding motivation, student engagement, instructional methods, and the diverse advantages of YouTube in various educational settings. The debate highlights the various benefits observed in rural schools and among public administration students, demonstrating the potential of YouTube to enhance vocabulary, pronunciation, and general language proficiency. The study emphasizes the significance of YouTube in offering authentic language exposure, promoting community growth, and leading to favorable outcomes in English proficiency.

The Relationship of Students‘ Learning Motivation and Their Speaking Performance

A skill to consider when learning English is speaking. Students need confidence in their English ability and to feel capable when speaking to others their age. In this situation, it is also essential for students to acquire simple language, and give them the confidence to communicate well. This study investigated the relationship between students' learning motivation and speaking performance students‘. The students in grade 12 in a vocational high school in East Jakarta will be the participants. A questionnaire is an instrument used to measure learning motivation. This study shows how vital learning motivation is for students and how it affects their ability to speak English well. The researcher collected and analyzed data using a questionnaire. The study's findings indicate that learning motivation improves students' speaking abilities. This can also be determined by students' speaking scores, which have met the Maximum Completion Criteria (MCC). The average score of students in this speaking lesson is 7.5, and the average score of students' motivation is 3.9 out of 5. This means that students remain motivated to learn to speak. In addition, students' motivation for speaking education has increased significantly. The above explanation explains that there is a positive correlation between the motivation of students and the ability to communicate.

Pragmatics Study: Commissive Speech Act Analysis in Song Lyrics “PERFECT“ by Ed Sheeran

The aim of this study is to describe the forms of commissive speech act in song lyrics “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. The data are purposively chosen in order to answer the research question. The data of this research are the commissive speech act used in the song lyrics of “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. This article employs the descriptive qualitative research, supported by some descriptive quantification. Thus, this article analyses the commissive speech act and its function. To explain the text clearly, a pragmatic analysis will be employed. The researcher finds the results (1) the whole data of commissive speech act in song lyrics “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran are 8 data that consist of 4 forms of commissive speech act used in song lyrics “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran namely promise, refusal, volunteer and offer. promise consists of 4 data, refusal consists of 1 data, volunteer consists of 2 data and offer consists of 1 data. The result of the study is “promise speech acts” is mostly used promise because the singer wanted to persuade her girlfriend to do something by using future predictive behaviour that the singer must believe can act in order to make the listener believe.

Types of Incorrectly-Pronounced Words by EFL Learners

The correct pronunciation supports the understanding of speaker and listener during communication. However, the different rules of sound becomes the challenge. Indonesian learners must imitate the sound of words as standardized by the natives of English. This research is conducted to reveal the type of words which are still incorrectly pronounced. By involving the participation of students of Amikom Purwokerto University who take a Business English class, the data is collected. Observation, recording and transcription becomes a technique to document the data. Meanwhile, transcription, classification, and patternization becomes the steps of analysis. The analysis presents that the words which are still difficult to pronounce are dominantly the words with diphthong, at the begining or the end of the words. Whereas, the monopthong is also sometimes become a problem. The familiarity of words plays a consideration for students to pronounce it based on their own understanding. Hence, the findings is expected to fulfill the students needs due to the fact that time limit requires lecturer to set a compact lesson material. Understanding the result of this research can help the lecturer to emphazise the learning by the type of words which are still incorrectly-pronounced by the students.

The Exploration of Duolingo Application for Vocabulary Building and Pronunciation of Pre-Service Teachers

Teaching and learning vocabulary and pronunciation is challenging for foreign language learning. Currently, the majority of vocabulary and pronunciation teaching in the classroom employs traditional and uninspiring approaches. Conversely, gamification-based technology in the educational environment is believed to facilitate learners' progress and skills. This study aims to investigate the potential of gamification-based technology media, specifically Duolingo, to enhance prospective English teachers' English vocabulary and pronunciation skills. This study employed a quantitative approach. The study was conducted at a private university in Jakarta with 72 students as participants. The results of this study indicate that most participants perceive learning a foreign language, particularly vocabulary and pronunciation, through Duolingo as relatively straightforward due to the numerous conversation exercises with diverse vocabulary. Several findings corroborate this regarding Duolingo's facilities, which include ease of access, variety of topics and information, and a positive effect on learners' motivation and enthusiasm for learning English. This research implies that Duolingo is an effective tool to support learners in learning foreign languages, especially vocabulary development and English pronunciation, which is easy and enjoyable.

Trial Braille Audio Media Development for Disability Foreign Student and Its Validation

Individuals with disabilities have equal rights to access education. For Disabilities Foreign Student (DFS), it is important to assist them in learning javanese scripts in Javanese Language and Literature Education Program (PBSJ). The development of a Braille audio media application (BAM) for script-based learning using technology was explored. This study aimed to analyze the validity of developing Braille audio media. The development method employed a 4-stage model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate, adapted into a 4-D model. The Javanese script Braille audio media application was developed using the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Waterfall model, encompassing planning, modeling, implementation, and testing phases. Validation results from practitioners and academics indicated that the media aspect validation was 82.5%, and validation from subject matter experts was 78.75%, both categorized as suitable. Developing the BAM based on information technology aids foreign students with disabilities in learning and exploring Javanese cultural values through Javanese scripts.

Increasing Students Reading Skills Using Audio-Visual Platform with Problem-Based Learning

This research aims to improve reading comprehension skills for students in eight-grade-student in Adimulyo, Indonesia. It is used YouTube video media platform and problem-based learning (PBL). Several media is used to improve students' reading skills and YouTube is the most effective for English Narrative text. The data collection method uses observation and tests. The data analysis method is descriptive for both qualitative data and quantitative data. The results showed that before treatment using YouTube video media, the average reading comprehension score of students was 62.70 (57.70%) with the medium category. In cycle 1 was increased to 70 (69.23%), and in cycle 2 students' was increased 81.54 (88.46%) with a very high category. The future expectation that YouTube videos can make a positive feedback for students‘ skills.

Exploring Student Perceptions of Quizizz for TOEFL Reading Practice

This study investigates students’ perceptions of using Quizizz for reading tests in TOEFL preparation classes. The research employs a quantitative approach through a survey conducted via a closed-ended questionnaire comprising 20 items. Data were collected using Google Forms, and analysis was performed using a 5-point Likert Scale, with averages calculated in Microsoft Excel. The study assesses six aspects of student perception: attractiveness, efficiency, perspicuity, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. The overall mean percentage score for Quizizz in the reading tests of TOEFL preparation classes is 77.37%, indicating a positive reception among students. The findings suggest that students perceive Quizizz as user-friendly and effective in enhancing their interest in reading tests, preferring it over other online learning tools. Consequently, Quizizz is recommended for use in TOEFL reading preparation classes, as it promotes enthusiasm among students, positioning it as a superior Mobile Assisted Language Learning tool compared to others.
